Vestibular Therapy
Vestibular disorders can result in symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, and nausea, often leading to significant functional limitations and decreased quality of life. At Victory Rehabilitation we aim to alleviate these symptoms and improve your ability to function in daily life without fear of falling by providing the following:
-
Comprehensive assessment: The first step is a thorough assessment conducted by a physical therapist with expertise in vestibular rehabilitation. This assessment includes a detailed history of the individual’s symptoms, medical history, and any factors that may contribute to their vestibular dysfunction. Objective tests such as vestibular function tests, balance assessments, and ocular motor tests may also be performed to identify specific impairments.
-
Individualized treatment plan: Based on the assessment findings, the PT will develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to the patient’s needs, goals, and level of impairment. The treatment plan may include a combination of exercises, maneuvers, and strategies aimed at improving balance, reducing dizziness and vertigo, and enhancing overall function.
-
Exercises and maneuvers: Our Vestibular therapy typically includes a variety of exercises and maneuvers designed to stimulate the vestibular system, promote adaptation, and improve balance and coordination. These exercises may include:
- Gaze stabilization exercises: These exercises aim to improve the ability to maintain visual focus during head movements, which is often impaired in individuals with vestibular disorders.
- Balance training: Balance exercises are used to improve stability and reduce the risk of falls. These exercises may involve standing on unstable surfaces, performing weight shifts, and practicing functional activities that challenge balance.
- Canalith repositioning maneuvers: For individuals with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), specific maneuvers such as the Epley maneuver or Semont maneuver may be performed to reposition displaced otoconia (calcium crystals) within the inner ear canals.
- Habituation exercises: These exercises involve repeated exposure to movements or positions that provoke symptoms, with the goal of reducing sensitivity and habituating the brain’s response to these stimuli.
-
Education and lifestyle modifications: We include education about the vestibular system, the nature of your disorder, and strategies for managing symptoms. This may include recommendations for lifestyle modifications, environmental adaptations, and strategies to minimize triggers for dizziness and vertigo.
-
Progress monitoring and reassessment: Throughout the course of treatment, the PT monitors your progress and adjusts the treatment plan as needed. Regular reassessment helps track improvements, identify areas of continued difficulty, and modify interventions to optimize outcomes.
-
Home exercise program: In addition to in-clinic sessions, individuals participating in our vestibular therapy program are often prescribed a home exercise program to supplement their treatment and facilitate progress between appointments. Consistent participation in home exercises is essential for maximizing the benefits of vestibular rehabilitation.
By targeting specific impairments of the vestibular system and promoting adaptation and compensation, Victory Rehabilitation empowers Patients to regain confidence in their balance and mobility and return to activities they enjoy.
