Top Reasons to Start Physical Therapy as the New Year Gets Underway

The start of a new year often brings big goals: moving more, feeling stronger, reducing pain, or simply keeping up with daily life. But now that January is almost behind us, many people are realizing their resolutions haven’t gone quite as planned.

If pain, stiffness, weakness, balance issues, or movement limitations are holding you back, physical therapy may be the missing piece. At Victory Rehabilitation, we work with patients of all ages to remove barriers, restore confidence in movement, and help people make real, sustainable progress—long after the motivation of January fades.

Below are some of the most common reasons people seek physical therapy in the new year—and how we can help.

1. You Started a Fitness Routine… and Pain Got in the Way

Many people jump into new workouts or activity routines in January only to be sidelined by joint pain, muscle strains, or lingering injuries from the past.

Physical therapy can help by:

  • Identifying movement faults or muscle imbalances
  • Treating pain and inflammation safely
  • Improving strength, flexibility, and mechanics
  • Helping you return to activity without fear of re-injury

At Victory Rehabilitation, we don’t just treat symptoms—we help you understand why your body is hurting and how to move better moving forward.

2. Chronic Pain Is Limiting Your Daily Life

If you’ve been living with neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain, hip pain, or joint stiffness, the new year is a great time to stop “pushing through it.”

Physical therapy can help with:

  • Chronic back and neck pain
  • Arthritis and joint degeneration
  • Headaches and posture-related pain
  • Overuse injuries and long-term mobility issues

Our team uses individualized treatment plans that may include manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, movement retraining, and advanced modalities to help reduce pain and improve function—without relying on medication or surgery when possible.

3. You Want to Improve Balance, Stability, or Prevent Falls

As we age, balance and confidence with movement can change. Many people don’t realize that physical therapy is one of the most effective tools for fall prevention and safe mobility.

Victory Rehabilitation works with older adults to:

  • Improve balance and coordination
  • Increase lower-body strength
  • Address dizziness or vertigo
  • Reduce fall risk and improve confidence

Staying active and independent is possible at every stage of life—and physical therapy plays a key role in making that happen.

4. Your Child Isn’t Meeting Developmental Milestones

The new year is often when parents take stock of their child’s development. If your child is delayed in crawling, walking, balance, coordination, or strength, early physical therapy intervention can make a meaningful difference.

Our pediatric physical therapy services support:

  • Gross motor delays
  • Torticollis and plagiocephaly
  • Hypotonia and coordination challenges
  • Gait abnormalities and balance concerns

We use play-based, evidence-driven therapy designed to help children gain age-appropriate skills while building confidence and independence.

5. You’re Recovering From Surgery or Injury

Whether you had surgery late last year or sustained an injury that hasn’t fully healed, physical therapy is essential for a safe and complete recovery.

We commonly treat:

  • Post-operative orthopedic conditions
  • Sports injuries
  • Work-related injuries
  • Sprains, strains, and fractures

At Victory Rehabilitation, we focus on restoring strength, range of motion, and function so you can return to work, sports, and everyday activities safely.

6. You’re Ready to Invest in Your Long-Term Health

Physical therapy isn’t just about recovery—it’s about prevention, performance, and long-term wellness. Many patients choose PT to:

  • Move more efficiently
  • Improve posture and strength
  • Address small issues before they become big problems
  • Stay active for the long haul

No matter your age or activity level, physical therapy can help you move better and feel stronger year-round.

Why Falls Matter this Fall Season

As the days grow shorter and the leaves turn, many of us welcome a cozy change of pace—but the shift in weather, lighting, and footing also brings a heightened risk of falls, especially for older adults. At Victory Rehabilitation, we believe this is the perfect time to raise awareness about falls and how they can lead to serious injury or even death—yet are often preventable.

  • Each year in the U.S., more than 14 million adults aged 65 and older (roughly 1 in 4) report falling. CDC+2CDC+2
  • Among those who fall, about 37% sustain an injury needing medical treatment or time out of usual activity. CDC+1
  • In 2021, there were 38,742 deaths in older adults from unintentional falls—rate of ~78 per 100,000 population. CDC+1
  • Fall-related death rates are climbing: since 2003 to ~2023, rates rose more than 70% for adults 65-74, over 75% for ages 75-84, and more than doubled for those 85+.
  • Globally, falls are the 2nd leading cause of unintentional injury death—an estimated 684 000 fatal falls occur per year. World Health Organization

These numbers underscore a stark truth: falling isn’t just a trip or embarrassing stumble—it can trigger fractures, head injuries, loss of independence, long hospital stays, and even death.

What Makes Falls So Dangerous?

Falls often initiate a cascade effect rather than being an isolated incident. Here’s why they matter:

  • Injury severity: A fall may cause a hip fracture, head trauma, or major soft-tissue injury—which in older adults leads to loss of mobility, fear of walking, decline in activity, and further health problems.
  • Loss of independence: Even a “minor” fall that causes a person to restrict their activity can lead to muscle loss, slower gait, and increased fall risk.
  • Medical/financial burden: The cost of falls among older adults in the U.S. is projected to exceed $100 billion by 2030.
  • Not inevitable: While age and frailty increase risk, falls are not an unavoidable part of aging. With the right assessment and intervention, many falls can be prevented. CDC

How Physical Therapy at Victory Rehabilitation Can Help

At Victory Rehabilitation, our team—led by experienced physical therapists—specializes in balance training, vestibular (vertigo) rehabilitation, gait training, and fall-prevention strategies tailored to each individual. Here’s how we help:

Comprehensive Assessment

We examine the root causes of balance issues and falls risk, including:

  • strength of lower-limb and core muscles
  • joint mobility (hips, ankles, knees)
  • gait and stride pattern
  • vestibular system/inner ear (for vertigo and dizziness)
  • medications, vision/hearing, home hazards

This personalized assessment guides your tailored plan.

Targeted Balance & Strength Training

Research shows physical therapy significantly reduces fall risk. For example, patients receiving PT after dizziness had an ~86 % reduction in odds of falling within a year. PMC+1
We work on:

  • strengthening legs, hips, core for stability
  • balance and reaction drills (standing on one leg, stepping over obstacles)
  • gait improvements: walking speed, stride length, safe turning and pivoting
  • vestibular rehab for vertigo/dizziness: eye-head coordination, inner-ear retraining, safe walking despite dizziness

Fall-Prevention Education & Environment Strategy

Beyond the exercises:

  • We identify home hazards (loose rugs, poor lighting, stairs)
  • We teach safe movement strategies (rising from floor, safe turns, using assistive devices)
  • We build confidence: fear of falling is a major barrier; confidence helps maintain mobility.

Better Outcomes & Independence

By addressing the underlying balance/vestibular issues and training functional mobility, patients are less likely to fall, maintain independence, and enjoy daily life with less fear and risk.

You have a choice in where to go for PT

In the same way that you choose your physician, you should also choose your physical therapist. This means that just because your doctor prescribes physical therapy (PT) and offers PT at the facility where they practice, doesn’t mean that you must go to PT at that facility. In truth, there are a lot of considerations to take into account before choosing a PT provider, including:

  • Location: While some patients will need PT once per week, others may need it two to three times per week. Regardless of your schedule, the time it takes to get to travel to and from the clinic should be taken into consideration.
  • Clinical Excellence: Experience and knowledge matters when it comes to making sure you get the best out of your rehab experience. At Victory Rehabilitation, our Therapists have over 25 years of experience and specialize in a variety of areas to ensure you are in the best hands.
  • Patient Care Philosophy: Your care and your outcomes are important, therefore, make sure to research the type of care that you will receive at a particular clinic. Many clinics today have therapists seeing multiple patients at once in a big, open gym which makes individualized care more difficult. This can negatively affect your outcomes and your experience.

When making the decision of which PT provider to start your rehab process with, there are many reasons to choose Victory Rehabilitation

  • Start Treatment Faster: We strive to get you started as quickly as possible! Whether it’s through a referral or Direct Access, we know you need PT urgently, and don’t want to wait weeks to be seen.
  • Convenience: Our locations is conveniently located to make it easy to get to and from your appointments.
  • Our Clinicians Work One-On-One with Patients: In addition to creating personalized treatment plans for each patient, we ensure that you will have quality one-on-one time with your therapist in a private treatment room to help you meet your personal goals and ensure the best outcomes and experience for you.
  • High Standard of Care: We pride ourselves in providing the best care. From the start, Victory Rehabilitation has thrived on “word of mouth” and a solid reputation of treating people like people and providing excellent care.

The Decision Is Yours

With your rehabilitation, it is important to remember that your healthcare decisions are up to you! Please call us with any questions or to get scheduled on your path to Victory!

Direct Access?

For many years, a referral from a doctor was required to begin physical therapy. This process could result in delayed treatment and unnecessary costs as you were waiting for appointments from provider to provider. With Georgia Practice Act (H.B. 505), you are now granted “Direct Access” to Physical Therapy. Now you can start receiving the Physical Therapy care that you need much sooner by calling and scheduling with Victory Rehabilitation directly without having to be sent to us by another practitioner! Our Physical therapists will perform an evaluation and start treatment immediatly. While some insurances may require pre-authorization, all you need to do is give us a call and we can look into your specific situation and make sure we have everything needed to get you started on the road to Victory as soon as possible!
